Ozaukee Master Gardeners - September Presentation

The Buzz About Native Wisconsin Bees “Native bees and bumblebees are disappearing,” reports Susan Carpenter. Carpenter, the Native Plant Garden curator and gardener at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum. Susan will teach us how we can foster native pollinators to maintain healthy ecosystems. The talk will include information about the bumble bee life cycle, some bee ID, tips for doing photo surveys, and uploading data to Bumble Bee Watch as a citizen scientist. Carpenter has worked with students and community volunteers to maintain and monitor a 4-acre garden representing the plant communities of southern Wisconsin. She also leads a conservation project that involves students and the public in documenting and studying native bumble bees, including the endangered rusty-patched bumble bee, Bombus affinis.
