Join us June 10th for Heritage Day-Handwerker Schau at Ozaukee County Pioneer Village. This year we are bringing back from the early days of Ozaukee County Pioneer Village, Handwerker Schau (Artisan’s Show). Whether it is a traditional trade of blacksmithing to make primitive hardware or to shoe the horses or it is a carpenter using vintage tools of his trade, you will learn how our ancestor’s worked with their hands. See how rope was made in the late 1800’s for use on the farm and at home. Learn how early gas engines helped to improve everyday tasks.
There will be demonstrations of embroidery/stitchery, tatting and quilting that were done to embellish the ordinary apron, bedding, curtain or furniture covering. Handmade baskets and wooden bowls were both beautiful in their design and utilitarian to gather vegetables, berries, grains or flowers. Candles were hand-dipped to provide a necessary source of light along with oil lamps. Learn about how the young girls helped in the kitchen to churn butter for the homemade bread that was baked in the summer kitchen. Hear stories from those who settled in the area and went to the one-room school house. Many of the activities will be interactive for people to experience.
Also providing exhibits and demonstrations are the Trinity-Freistadt Historical Society, the Jonathan Clarke House Museum, the Grafton Historical Society and the Oscar Grady (Saukville) Library.
